TIPS FOR SAFE WINTER DRIVING
We love upstate New York! Except for having to drive in snow, sleet, and ice during the cold, harsh months of winter. Personal injury accidents, unfortunately, go hand-in-hand with snow-covered roads. But you can avoid accidents and injuries by preparing yourself and your car. Here are some helpful tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
- Slow down! It takes longer to control or stop your vehicle on a snow-covered road.
- Leave extra distance between your car and the vehicle ahead of yours.
- Reduce your speed as you near an intersection, traffic light or stop sign.
- Plan ahead! Make sure your vehicle is well-stocked in the event of an accident or emergency. Pack a small shovel, broom and ice scraper to clear windows and the windshield, and a flashlight in case you’re stuck in the dark.
- Stay warm! It never hurts to pack a blanket, extra coat, winter hat and scarf.
- Stay in touch! Bring your cell phone with you in the car – even for a “short trip” that’s close to home. And don’t forget to pack a cell phone charger too!
If you have an accident with your vehicle while driving in snowy conditions:
• Stay with your car – don’t risk severe cold, frostbite or the dangers of passing cars.
• Turn on the vehicle’s flashers or emergency lights, so other motorists know you need help and stay a safe distance away with their cars.
• Call for help – to family, friends and police.
Lemire & Higgins represents victims of auto accidents. If you are involved in a crash during winter weather, protect yourself and your family:
Call the police – provide your driver license and insurance information – and ask how you can get a copy of the police accident report.
- Use your cell phone to take photos at the accident scene. Photos taken after a crash showing the vehicles involved and the location of the accident are invaluable evidence and will help your personal injury lawsuit/claim.
- Do not discuss fault (who caused the accident?) with the drivers or passengers of other vehicles involved.
- Report the accident to your insurance company promptly.
